Executive Vice President's Welcome
Santa
Barbara City College (SBCC) is committed to doing all that it
can to promote student learning and attainment of their educational
goals. This commitment is reflected in the College Plan for 1999-2002
which calls for SBCC to be in the top 10% of all California community
colleges on such measures of student success as successful course
completion, college persistence, certificate and degree completion,
and transfer to a four-year college or university. Our commitment
to promoting student learning and achievement of their educational
objectives is also reflected in the professional development opportunities
provided to enhance faculty members' knowledge of effective instructional
strategies that are responsive to the diverse learning needs of
students.
Experienced faculty and instructional administrators
have designed the Faculty Teaching and Learning Seminar for community
college faculty in general and those in their first year of teaching
at SBCC in particular. The Faculty Teaching and Learning Seminar
contains valuable information you need to have about teaching
at SBCC. It also includes practical advice and examples of teaching
strategies you can use that experienced community college faculty
have found to be effective in promoting student learning in their
courses. I encourage you to take advantage of the rich resources
that have been incorporated in the Faculty Teaching and Learning
Seminar course. The time and effort you invest in this seminar
will enhance the quality of the learning experience and the degree
of success that your students and you will have at the college.
Please feel free to discuss the information and instructional
strategies presented in the Faculty Teaching and Learning Seminar
with the chair of your department, other faculty and staff, the
dean for your department and/or deans Jack Ullom and Marilynn
Spaventa, the co-leaders of the college's Faculty Professional
Development program.
Participating in this seminar will help you have a successful,
professionally rewarding and enjoyable year at the college.
Sincerely,
Jack Friedlander
Executive Vice-President of Educational Programs
