Faculty Enrichment Committee

  • The Faculty Enrichment Committee meets the second and fourth Thursdays of each month from 3:30 - 5:00 pm in the BC Conference Room. There is divisional representation and all faculty are welcome to attend meetings. The Faculty Enrichment Committee organizes a variety of activities:

    • New Faculty Orientation

The Faculty Enrichment Committee traditionally organized orientation for new contract faculty several days before the beginning of the fall semester. Evening sessions were offered for new adjunct faculty each semester. This responsibility was then taken on by the Academic Senate President. Now, as a result of a grant from the Chancellor's Office, the orientations have been expanded and offered in face to face sessions and on-line. You are there!

    • Inservice and Flex activities

Inservice Day, the day before classes in both fall and spring semesters, is an opportunity for faculty to hear an update on the state of the College, to enjoy lunch with colleagues and to meet with divisions and departments.

Title 5 guidelines allow districts the opportunity to offer a Flexible academic calendar that includes the substitution of pre-approved staff development activities for teaching days includes both campus-wide activities and departmental (or division) professional development activities. In January 1998, after a vote by the majority of faculty, the SBCC Board of Trustees approved a modification to the Academic Calendar to incorporate Flex time to allow for dedicated days for professional development when classes are not in session.

    • Conference Attendance

The budget for travel and conference is distributed by divisional deans to contract faculty. Priority for funding is given to conference activities that relate to the College Plan or to specific department or program or goals. Each year the FEC also supports contract faculty to attend the Great Teachers Seminar, and the Asilomar Womens' Leadership Seminar and other non-discipline specific conferences if funds are available. Opportunities are announced via email. (Be sure to check your email regularly!) Funding requests should be coordinated with the department chair and submitted to the division dean. Travel and Conference Request Forms are available in the Accounting Office (A130).

    • Faculty Enrichment Grants

Each year the FEC has approximately $20,000 to support faculty projects. Proposals are due in February. Adjunct faculty are eligible to apply for grants after their fifth year of teaching at the College.

    • Social Events

The Committee organizes social events that vary from semester to semester: picnics, all campus lunches, holiday parties.

    • The Faculty Voice

Once a year the faculty journal of essays, creative writing and art work is produced and distributed to all faculty. Dr. Michael Walker of the English department has been our editor for the last two years. We hope that you will contribute to future issues.

    • Instructional Improvement Booklet

Faculty members are recognized annually for their contributions to teaching and program excellence in the publication entitled "Instructional Improvement at Santa Barbara City College."

  • Faculty Resource Center

The Faculty Resource Center provides extensive training in technology for faculty.

  • Department or Divisional Training

Departments such as English, English Skills and ESL, and Mathematics have organized round-table training sessions and summer workshops to help keep large departments up-to-date on changes in curriculum and technology. These activities are funded and adjunct and contract faculty are compensated for attendance.

  • Study Abroad Directorships

Under the direction of Carola Smith, the Study Abroad Office assists faculty in planning and leading study abroad programs to a variety of countries. You'll be planning a program and packing your bags after you explore this site!

  • Sabbaticals

After seven years of full-time teaching, contract faculty are eligible to apply for one semester or full academic year sabbatical projects.
