Faculty Practical Tip Sheet

 

ABSENCE REPORTS
If you become ill and cannot meet your class, first contact your department chair and then contact the Educational Programs Office, ext. 2579 (7:30 am - 4:30 pm), who will post a notification if the class is to be cancelled. After 4:30 pm, call the campus switchboard, who will notify the evening dean and post a notice if necessary.

ACADEMIC SENATE REPRESENTATION
The adjunct faculty have an elected representative that sits on the Academic Senate. This senator should be in contact with you through a newsletter and/or email throughout the semester to advise you of governance issues being discussed. The adjunct senator is elected each year in the Fall semester. To ascertain who this representative is, contact your department chair or the Senate Office, ext. 2217.

ADDS and DROPS
Students may add classes until the end of the second week of classes. They may drop until the tenth week of classes. Students will present an Add card to you for your signature. An Add or Drop card must be filed by the student in the Admissions and Records Office OR you may drop a student who has not been attending. You will receive drop rosters from admissions with a due date for return. It is VERY IMPORTANT to return all rosters on time! Also, you should check with your department chair for any department policies as to how adds are handled, e.g., lottery, 1st-come, 1st-served, standby, etc.

AUDITING CLASSES
Students are not permitted to audit ("sit in") courses without being enrolled unless they have already taken the course for the maximum times allowable. Refer to the college catalog for audit policies.

BOOKSTORE
The Bookstore has available for purchase all books and supplies required for classes at SBCC. A selection of clothing with the college insignia is also available for sale, as are various novelty and paper goods. Contact ext. 2870.

CAREER ADVANCEMENT CENTER
The Career Advancement Center is located in the Student Services building and provides students with direct access to the college's comprehensive business, occupational and career development programs and services. For assignments encouraging students to use the Career Advancement Center which facilitates early goal setting and increased motivation go to two sites. CLASS ROSTERS
Admissions rosters are placed in your mailbox in the East Campus Administration Bldg, the night before school begins. Those teaching in the IDC building or the ESL department will have their rosters delivered to their building.

COLLEGE POLICIES

CONTACT PERSONS
Your first and continuing point of contact is your department chair. He/she can direct you and orient you to department-specific, as well as general, information you will need.

COUNSELING CENTER
SBCC's Counseling Center provides trained, experienced personnel qualified to counsel and teach SBCC students. Counselors assist students in assessment, evaluation and selection of areas of study and classes, help students attain their educational goals and objectives, provide career counseling services, provide personal counseling and coordinate with area high schools and 4-year colleges and universities for the smooth transition from high school though college. DUPLICATING/COPYING
Department chairs should give you the code number for the closest copy machine(s) in your area. All machines use the same code number, but some satellite machines might not be programmed to accept numbers. To activate a machine, enter your number on the keypad and press the * key. After completing your copying, delete your number by again pressing the * key. The satellite copiers should not be used for more than 20 copies, as they are relatively expensive. For longer runs, the Duplicating Center should be used.

In the Duplicating Center, located on the bottom floor of the Administration Bldg. on East campus in corner behind Payroll, there are two helpful employees ready to train you to use the self-serve machines or to process your major copying needs. Also, duplicating orders are picked up for processing from the West campus and returned within 24 hours.

Copies made by Duplicating cost 1¢ while those at satellite copiers cost 1½ ¢.

EMAIL ADDRESS
Department chairs will need to verify your status as an adjunct instructor in order for you to acquire a log-in for an email account. Contact the Help Desk at x 2215 and they will email a form to you which can be filled out and emailed back to them.

EVALUATION
As adjunct faculty, you will be evaluated by your department chair during the first, and second semester of teaching and then every fourth semester or two years, whichever occurs first. Student surveys are an integral part of the evaluation process, so your students will be surveyed on a standard form by the tenured faculty who participate in your evaluation. New, fulltime probationary faculty are evaluated twice the first year and once the next three years until they are given tenure status. After that they are evaluated every three years.

FACULTY RESOURCE CENTER
The Faculty Resource Center is located in R7 and furnishes all technological training and web development for faculty. In addition, the FRC furnishes a variety of professional development workshops throughout the year. Contact Mark Ferrer at ext. 2660 or David Wong at ext. 2862.

FINANCIAL AID
SBCC provides several types of financial aid to students, including loans, grants, employment, scholarships and special programs. Waivers for fees (BOGG) are also available to qualified students. Click on Financial Aid for more information or call extension 2716.

THE FOUNDATION FOR SBCC
The importance of The Foundation for SBCC in the acquisition of private funding for college activities and programs cannot be overstated. Endowments, bequests, scholarships, and capital donations all contribute to the margin of excellence SBCC enjoys.

HEALTH and WELLNESS
The college's Health and Wellness office provides a full time nurse and mental health counselor, as well as weekly doctor's visits and community health referrals. Programs addressing health issues are presented throughout the year. First Aid, CPR, and emergency response care are also part of the college's services. Call ext. 2298 or 2299 for assistance.

HORTICULTURAL GARDENS
On the East Campus bluff, overlooking the harbor, are the beautiful Horticultural Gardens featuring edible specimen plants from all over the world. The garden also supplies the Hotel Restaurant Culinary program kitchens with fresh herbs, flowers and garnishes to compliment the meals served on campus.

HOUSING
As a service to students living away from home, the Student Activities Office (Campus Center, Room 217) maintains a list of available rooms, apartments, and room and board situations in the community. This list is available on the web at Housing.

INFORMATION RESOURCES DIVISION
IRD provides support for the college's technology infrastructure, as well as programming, analysis, technical assistance and the "Help Desk," where faculty and staff can obtain just in time computer and software assistance. The Help Desk may be reached at ext. 2215.

INSTITUTIONAL PLANNING AND RESEARCH
The Office of Institutional Planning and Research generates and analyzes data in support of college planning, accreditation, institutional effectiveness, program review and a host of other research needs. Contact Andreea Serban ext. 2922 for specific information.

INSTRUCTORS' ASSOCIATION
SBCC has what is called a "thin contract", which means that only salaries, benefits and working conditions are covered by the Instructor's Association. All other matters are handled by the Academic Senate. The IA is an independent faculty association that serves as the official bargaining unit for all faculty. The IA is affiliated with CCCI, California Community College Independents, a statewide faculty association that is not associated with CTA or AFT. The official statewide representative in Sacramento for the IA is FACCC, Faculty Association of California Community Colleges.

KEYS
Keys may be checked out through Purchasing (keys)
in the East Campus Administration Bldg, Room A123.
Complete a key request form and get the necessary signature from the department chair before trying to secure your key(s). Keys are distributed only between 10am-2pm. If you lose a key, there is a $50 replacement fine.

LEARNING RESOURCES (LRC)
The Learning Resource Center is located in the same building as the Luria Library on the West Campus. A large library of video tapes, computers for word processing and special laboratory assignments and other resource materials, as well as study skills and tutorial centers are available for your and student use. Check with your department chair concerning discipline-specific tapes, which are available for you to borrow.

OFFICE SPACE
Check with your department chair regarding where you will be parking your belongings. There is a very critical office space problem on campus, so there may not be individual space for you to have a permanent office.

PARKING
Permits are available from the Security Office in the Northeast corner of the East Campus Student Services Building. Department chairs may need to verify your teaching status in order to have a permit issued. Adjunct faculty will receive a semester pass.

PAYROLL
You may arrange with Payroll in A 130 to have your paycheck mailed to you or you may pick it up. Automatic deposit is not available to adjunct faculty. Faculty are paid the last day of the month. Adjunct faculty are paid in five equal installments during the semester.

PERSONAL SERVICE ATTENDANTS and AUXILIARY AIDES
Students wishing to use a Personal Service Attendant or an Auxiliary Aide (sign language interpreter, note taker, etc.) must make the request through the Disabled Students Programs and Services office before the attendant or aide is allowed to attend your class. Contact Janet Shapiro at ext. 2365 for procedures to be followed. DSPS will notify you if the request for Personal Service Attendant or Auxiliary Aide has been approved.

PURCHASING
The Purchasing (keys) department processes requisitions for supplies, equipment, furniture and other college needs. They also issue and track keys. Call Kara Ramirez at 2590

Word Processing
The college provides a limited amount of secretarial assistance for the production of classroom materials. You may receive word processing, overhead and some Power Point assistance from Mary James, ext. 2356, Secretarial Support in the Humanities Bldg H322. Usually the turn around time is 3 days to a week, depending on the size of the project and the current workload. Some departments or divisions may also have their own secretarial personnel.

STUDENT DISCIPLINE
Disruptive students, instances of cheating and all other matters of student discipline should be reported to Educational Programs Dean, Dr. Ron Baker at ext.2278. Use keyword search for more detailed instructions and templates for student discipline.

TEXTBOOKS
All texts should be on the shelves in the Bookstore. If students report to you that texts are not available or that they have run out, contact the text buyer Kathleen Finn at x 2870. Any materials you wish duplicated for sale through the bookstore should be given to the text buyer by the third week in May. Students may reserve or purchase their texts on the web. All books and class materials must be purchased through the college Bookstore. Bookstore hours are M-Th 7:45 a.m.-7p.m. and Fri 7:45 am-4:00 p.m.

TRANSFER CENTER
The Transfer Center, located in SS-140 is designed to offer assistance to students and staff on transfer concerns. The Center provides access to catalogs and other information on California State University and the University of California, as well as many independent California and out-of-state colleges and universities. WAREHOUSE
The Warehouse is located in A121 is where large packages or boxes may be mailed and where similar objects are picked up. A few college supplies are also dispensed from the Warehouse. Contact Brian Beach at ext. 2360.
