Facilitating Class Discussions

Introduction
The special contribution of class discussions to learning is that if the student explains, summarizes, or questions concepts the student is much more apt to remember and apply the information in the future.

There are three primary challenges in leading discussions:

  • Achieving a discussion by a cross section of students

  • Making progress towards course objectives

  • Handling the emotional reactions of students

Lesson Goal: Study means of facilitating effective class discussions

Learning Objectives

  1. Promote student critical thinking about subject matter

  2. Evaluation of logic in their thinking and that of their teacher and classmates

  3. Provide an opportunity to apply principles learned in class

  4. Practice formulating problems based on class lectures and readings

  5. Develop motivation for further learning

  6. Receive prompt feedback on their cognition of the course material and concepts
