Department and Divisional Structure

There are more than 50 academic and vocational departments at Santa Barbara City College. Each department has a chairperson who provides leadership for activities such as evaluations, scheduling and budget. Departments develop their own curriculum according to the majors, certificates or competencies embodied in the discipline. Chairs interface with the Deans and other administrators on matters of departmental management. Each department has a Dean who oversees administrative matters and represents the department's interests to the administrative team.

Each department belongs to one of 11 Divisions, composed of several loosely related departments. For the purposes of shared governance, each Division has one or two Senators - depending on the size of the Division - that represent the perspectives of the Division's faculty on the Academic Senate and who convey issues before the Senate back to their respective Divisions. Functions of the Academic Senate are explained in the subsequent section on Governance.
