Memory Techniques

AUTHOR: Margaret Prothero
English Skills

I've a great memory for forgetting, David.
-Robert Louis Stevenson, from Kidnapped.

Introduction

"I have very bad news," says the doctor. "You have cancer, and you have Alzheimer's." "Well," says the patient, "at least I don't have cancer!"

Obviously, students need strong memory skills in order to recall the vast amount of information they learn from their courses and readings. Unfortunately, many students consider their ability to remember to be one of their greatest weaknesses.

Some students also believe that having a great memory is something one is born with. However, once they understand that memory can be strengthened and learn some specific memory "tricks" and strategies to use, students will become more confident in their memory abilities-their understanding will be deepened, their study more efficient and recall faster and more reliable.
