Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.

Introduction

Teachers know that college and graduate level courses rely heavily on content area reading. However, this may come as a surprise to the new student who believes that if s/he just comes to every class, s/he will pass the course.

Although courses have skill level advisories and requirements for reading levels, it is very common for students to take courses that are above their reading abilities.

Here are some reading strategies you can use in your classes or teach your students to use at home, as they work through the reading materials for your course.

Learning Objectives

Lesson Goal:
Faculty will strengthen understanding of how to encourage effective comprehension of course reading materials.

Learning Objectives:
Faculty will:

  1. understand the three stages of the reading process: before reading, during reading and after reading

  2. understand the procedures and benefits of three reading strategies: ReQuest, SQ3R and REAP

  3. understand how to apply the above strategies to the reading in their courses

  4. gain appreciation of effective reading strategies' effect on reading comprehension.
