Study Skills Tips
Tips And Pointers
In the early weeks of the semester, give students
the short Self-Assessment for Success Screening Inventory (SASSI)
developed by faculty member Dr. Ray Launier. The test takes about
10-15 minutes to fill in and score. Directions on how to score
and interpret it are included with the test so that students can
do it themselves. You can then discuss the results with them and
work with those students who see the need to improve their study
skills. The forms are available in the bookstore and the Counseling
Center.
Assignment
- As you make up your syllabus for your classes,
follow the check-list provided above. Review the details from
the syllabus three weeks after the beginning of classes.
- Create an ideal set of notes for one of your
lectures. Leave 10-15 minutes (depending on how much time you
want for discussion) at the end of that class period to show
students your outline for comparison with the notes that they
took.
- Print out and duplicate the "Quick Tips
for Students" that are included in this lesson. Devote
fifteen minutes of one class period on tips for more effective
reading of your textbook and then hand out the Quick Tip on
that topic. You can do a similar lesson on how to study for
a test just before your first big test.
- Divide students up into small groups sometime
during the first two weeks of class and ask each group to develop
five recommendations they would give to someone who wants to
get an A in the class. Compare the lists of the groups. This
will provide an excellent opportunity to review with them general
tips for student success.
- Create a graphic organizer for one of your reading
assignments and require students to use it for taking notes.
Leave some time to discuss with them the advantages and disadvantages
of this note taking technique. [Link to
