List five things you can do in your classes to facilitate
student success.
- Inform students about the skills necessary for
success. Help students evaluate their skills.
- Make sure students know that prerequisites,
co-requisites and advisories are serious.
- Encourage students to improve their study skills.
Incorporate a little study skills training into your classes.
Make sure students are keeping track (realistically) of their
progress and performance in the class.
- Inform students about the time requirements
to be successful in your class. Let them know you are serious.
- Motivate students by making classes as
interesting as you can, challenging without being overwhelming
and relevant when possible.
Feedback
- What do you do when a student comes to your office
with the complaint that she cannot remember anything that she
is reading?
- A student has failed your midterm test and protests
that he studied hard for it. What questions would you ask him
in order to isolate the factors involved in his failure and
to help him know how to succeed on the next test?
