Building
friendships during a break in the seminar
"I
am excited about the student hub and have registered to participate
in the Pipeline training for the spring semester."
"I
really appreciated the 'explore' portions of the web lessons."
"Besides
benefiting from the professional input of instructors from
other disciplines, I think it was important to be able to
share (and commiserate) with each other about the new experiences
and the challenges of the first semester."

The
breaks were a favorite time!

12 - Vocabulary Building in All Disciplines
Margaret Prothero returns to lead a highly interactive session
which provides participants with many strategies for teaching
interdisciplinary vocabulary skills. Examples of activities
that are based upon open and closed word sorts and various vocabulary
graphic organizers will definitely give the participants activities
that they will want to use in their next class to build a stronger
understanding of content based vocabulary.

19 - Dealing with Difficult Students
Alyson Bostwick, counseling, and Mary Wiemann, Communications,
lead a lesson based upon Attitude, Aptitude and Application
as they relate to conflict situations. Because of their thoroughness
and practical application, the lessons that Alyson and Mary
developed in Conflict Management for the 4sbccfaculty.org
web site have been adopted for the state online course for
adjunct faculty.

Faculty
will learn the basic steps for handling potential conflicts
that occur in or out of the classroom. The Stop, Look, Listen,
and Respond method taught in the lesson will give participants
a systematic way to handle conflict situations. Sample letters
for disruptive students plus easy access to student conduct
materials will also be given to faculty.

"The information about resources available at this school
was very valuable. I feel much more prepared and plugged in
to the community."
"As
soon as I get my syllabi prepared I am planning to use the
syllabus site to post them. It makes changes to the syllabus
(or corrections) so much easier."
|
|
"It's one thing to be comfortable in your new job, it's
another to feel welcomed and truly a part of the college from
the very beginning."
"Actually,
all of the lessons have yielded at least some insights that
I will be or already am using in one way or another. It's
no exaggeration to say that with the breadth and wide-ranging
scope of its content, the seminar has greatly enriched my
perception of the educational environment at SBCC."
